The FRACP written exam format

The Written Examination is one of the two summative approaches to assessment for Basic Trainees in the PREP Program.

As of 2013 onwards, the written examination for Adult Medicine comprises of a combination of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) AND Extended Matching Questions (EMQs).

Medical Science Paper — 70 questions (2 hours)

  • Medical Science – examines a candidate’s understanding of the principles of medicine and the basic sciences applicable to clinical medicine.
  • The MCQs are a format of single-best alternative from five options which cover a range of subspecialties.
  • The paper will have 66 MCQs and 4 EMQs.

Clinical Applications Paper — 100 questions (3 hours)

  • Clinical Applications – examines a candidate’s understanding of the practice of medicine and therapeutics. Some questions are concerned with the interpretation of clinical investigation material, for example, ECGs, X-rays and haematological findings.
  • The paper will have 92 MCQs and 8 EMQs.
